Understanding Passivation in Double-C Cells
Passivation is a phenomenon that all lithium primary cells experience, for more information please see our paper on "Passivation in Lithium Batteries for HDD Sondes".
- What is Passivation:
- Occurs in all lithium primary cells due to interaction between lithium anode and electrolyte.
- A thin layer forms instantly on the anode surface when electrolyte is added.
- This layer protects the anode and conserves active materials during storage, extending shelf life.
- Effects of Passivation:
- Normally does not degrade performance.
- If the layer becomes too thick (e.g., due to long storage or high temperature), it can impair discharge performance.
- Thick passivation can cause voltage delay—a lag between applying a load and voltage response.
- May show as a low battery reading or unacceptable voltage on a Transmitter Information Screen.
- Battery Behavior:
- Once installed and discharging, battery voltage typically rises to normal levels.
- Discharge helps break down the passivation layer, increasing porosity and power output.
- One Source Batteries (OSB) Specific Practices:
- Double C cells are De-Passivated every 6 months and tested before shipping.
- Recommended to install or maintain within 4 to 6 months after purchase.
- Installing after this window may show low voltage due to passivation.
- Passivation can be reversed by Depassivating the cell again.
- Installation Insight:
- Once a battery with acceptable voltage is installed, it starts discharging.
- When your Double C cell is installed the battery begins discharging and the lithium ions migrate through the battery, breaking down the passivation layer.
- This leads to full battery utilization and proper operation.
Notes
Battery life differs according to the transmitter being used, the materials and depths it is being used in.
A deeper depth transmitter will use more power than lower depth transmitters.
These batteries are designed to fit most all DigiTrak® transmitters and DitchWitch beacons.
